Youth Diversion hosted its 51st Annual Meeting this past Thursday honouring Zachary Bathurst as the 2026 Volunteer of the Year. Zachary is one of our Mentors who has gone above and beyond in supporting this Mentee. We also honoured and congratulated Anne Marie McDonald who retired from our Board of Directors after serving 6 years with the last year as our Vice President. Anne Marie was also chosen by the Board of Directors as this year's recipient of the Nick Bala Distinguished Service Award, presented to an outstanding Youth Diversion Volunteer who has made a difference in our community. Anne Marie has directed her passions towards the Ace's Resilience Coalition and is the backbone of the work taking place with the Unnamed Youth Project. For the past six years, the Legg family has hosted the Scottie Charity Poker Game to honor Scottie’s life and keep his memory alive. It has been nearly six years since Scottie was tragically taken from his family, friends, and community in a car accident. Since then, this annual event has brought people together to share stories, celebrate memories, and reflect on the lasting impact Scottie had on those around him.

More than just a fundraiser, the Scottie Charity Poker Game is a celebration of a remarkable young man whose kindness, spirit, and influence continue to be felt throughout the community. Although Scottie's life was cut short at the age of 16, his legacy lives on through the people he touched and the support this event generates each year.

I am deeply humbled and honored to have received the 2026 First Capital Honourable Achievement Award.

To say this recognition came as a surprise would be an understatement. As I like to quote my favorite line from Christmas Vacation: "If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I couldn't be any more surprised." That's exactly how I felt when I learned I would be receiving this award.

I want to sincerely thank the many people who reached out with congratulations and kind words. To be honest, the support, encouragement, and acknowledgment from my peers are every bit as meaningful to me as the award itself.

This recognition represents more than 30 years of supporting young people as they navigate challenges and work toward brighter futures. Along the way, I have been fortunate to work alongside incredible staff, colleagues, community partners, and service organizations, including the Rotary Club of Kingston the Kinsmen Club of Kingston United Way Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington United Way Hastings & Prince Edward. This award belongs to all of you as much as it does to me. Without your support, and shared commitment to helping others, I might still be working at Brew Bye You... a true blast from the past!

Those of us in the helping profession know that the real reward does not come from trophies, or titles. It comes from the everyday interactions with the people we have the privilege of walking alongside. It comes from witnessing resilience, and helping someone take the next step forward.

Volunteering and helping others are rooted in the belief that people want to do well. If they could do better on their own, they would, because that is their preferred state of being. When someone is struggling, our first response should not be to ask, "What have you done wrong?" Instead, we should ask, "What has happened to you?" Listening with empathy and understanding is often where meaningful change begins.

Thank you again for this incredible honor. I am truly grateful, and I share this recognition with everyone who has been part of this journey.
