I am deeply humbled and honored to have received the 2026 First Capital Honourable Achievement Award.To say this recognition came as a surprise would be an understatement. As I like to quote my favorite line from Christmas Vacation: "If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I couldn't be any more surprised." That's exactly how I felt when I learned I would be receiving this award.I want to sincerely thank the many people who reached out with congratulations and kind words. To be honest, the support, encouragement, and acknowledgment from my peers are every bit as meaningful to me as the award itself.This recognition represents more than 30 years of supporting young people as they navigate challenges and work toward brighter futures. Along the way, I have been fortunate to work alongside incredible staff, colleagues, community partners, and service organizations, including the Rotary Club of Kingston the Kinsmen Club of Kingston United Way Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington United Way Hastings & Prince Edward. This award belongs to all of you as much as it does to me. Without your support, and shared commitment to helping others, I might still be working at Brew Bye You... a true blast from the past!Those of us in the helping profession know that the real reward does not come from trophies, or titles. It comes from the everyday interactions with the people we have the privilege of walking alongside. It comes from witnessing resilience, and helping someone take the next step forward.Volunteering and helping others are rooted in the belief that people want to do well. If they could do better on their own, they would, because that is their preferred state of being. When someone is struggling, our first response should not be to ask, "What have you done wrong?" Instead, we should ask, "What has happened to you?" Listening with empathy and understanding is often where meaningful change begins.Thank you again for this incredible honor. Youth Diversion's first fundraising event in over 10 years, "Pins with a Purpose" Bowl a Thon is shaping up very nicely. A huge shout out to RDR Financial Wealth Management and Paul Di Rinaldo for becoming our Lunch Sponsor. A special mention to Ryan Wahab and Sandra Lachapelle from TD as they helped us secure one of the Youth Bowling Sponsors through TD bank. A huge shout out to Chloe Youmans from L&A Mutual Insurance Co. who chose Youth Diversion to share her $2000 donation in celebration of L&A Mutual Insurance Co. 150 anniversary. On August 8th, 1876, an organization meeting was held at Newburgh, at which five directors were chosen to act until an annual meeting was held to elect directors as required by the Insurance Act. Acting Directors were: John Percy, Henry Huffman, James Daly, N.A. Caton, and Marshall Huffman. On August 17th, 1876, the first policy was issued to Peter Miller, of Ernestown. These funds will support our Kids Can't Wait Prevention Fund ensuring we can continue to support prevention services in KFLA. #locallove #YGK #150years #Prevention
