How Youth Jump Works
Youth JUMP is designed provide youth with the support necessary to comply with their court order.
The goals of Youth JUMP are:
- Assist youth to comply with their court orders;
- Hold youth accountable for their actions and decisions;
- Involve the community in the Youth Justice system;
- Provide alternatives to custodial sentences for non-compliance
Who is Eligible?
Youth between the ages of 12 and 17 who have been in conflict with the law and who are under:
- A probation order, or
- A judicial release order
and who are at risk of being, or have demonstrated a pattern of non-compliance with the order.
How to Make a Referral
Referrals can come from:
- Police
- Probation
- Crown
- Judge
The majority of referrals will be made after the commencement of proceedings. Youth could be referred through an extrajudicial sanction program or as a component of the sentencing process.
Volunteering with JUMP
Volunteers act as mentors to the youth. They are required to dedicate a minimum of 4 to 6 hours per week. The focus of the time spent with the youth is on enabling the young person to comply with his or her court order.
Volunteers must be:
- Carefully screened
- Certified in non-violent crisis intervention and C.P.R.
- Highly supported by staff
The JUMP Process
Once a referral is received:
- The supervising probation officer is consulted
- The youth is assessed
- An intervention strategy is developed in conjunction with probation, the volunteer, the youth, his or her family and the referring source where appropriate
- The youth is matched with a volunteer
- Other agencies are involved as needed to assist with the intervention strategy
- Progress is monitored.
At the conclusion of involvement in JUMP, a report is provided to the referring source as well as the youth and probation officer.
