Kairos Elementary Addictions Counsellor

(Salary $19.00 -$22.79 per hour)

Full Time (35 hours per week) – 1 year contract position starting April 1 2019, with the possibility of renewal on March 31 2020  


Youth Diversion helps youth overcome challenges by:

Providing individualized services to divert youth from risk; Providing both intervention and prevention services; and, Working collaboratively and in partnership with youth, their families, other agencies and our community.


Thank you to our local United Way KFLA and the Kingston Penitentiary Tours for a grant that will allow Youth Diversion to increase its capacity to support students in Elementary schools seeking substance use support and educational awareness.




  • Diploma or Degree in the social sciences with a concentration in the field of Substance Use and Addictions
  • Bilingual in French and English considered an asset.  *Bilingual candidates please indicate on your resume your level of French Language proficiency both oral and written
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in the field of Substance Use and Addictions supporting children, youth and young adults.  A focus on addictions issues within the elementary school aged population is considered an asset
  • Meet the minimum requirements or working towards certification by the CACCF
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Bio-Psycho-Social model and the Harm Reduction approach
  • Provide one-on-one and group sessions for youth
  • Knowledge of programs and treatment options for youth
  • Strong public speaking skills and possess an ease and ability to present to groups
  • Satisfactory criminal record and vulnerable sector check
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
  • Reliable transportation and proof of insurance
  • Updated first aid and CPR training



  • Strong knowledge of community agencies and resources
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Sound knowledge of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative therapy,  Stages of change Model and Harm Reduction Theory
  • Ability to establish rapport with clients
  • Ability to utilize Client Information System Database for client record keeping
  • Ability to collect and submit appropriate data for statistical analysis


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assess the needs of the client using standardized screening and assessment tools related to the field of substance use and addictions
  • Develop an action/intervention plan that is evidence based and reflects the needs of the client and best practice
  • Deliver the program or service according to the standards of the organization
  • Ensure client documentation is complete including files, case notes and reports
  • Provide written reports as required
  • Liaise with agencies in the areas of education, child welfare, mental health, and justice
  • Maintain accurate statistics and report as required
  • Engage in a multi-disciplinary approach to client needs and refer clients to other agencies as necessary
  • Maintain client confidentiality as required by law and according to our policies
  • Provide individual and group counselling through an outreach approach
  • Provide individual assessments using standardized screening and assessment tools
  • Develop and deliver psycho-educational workshops
  • Refer clients for residential treatment and completion of  assessments as appropriate


Other Considerations:

  • Engage in professional development to ensure skills and knowledge remain current
  • Engage in public education to promote the services of the organization
  • Be guided and have in depth knowledge of the twelve core functions of an Addiction Counsellor
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director


The position requires the successful applicant to work flexible hours and travel through the Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington regions (KFL&A).  A current Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check, valid Class “G” driver’s licence and references are required.   The use of reliable vehicle with required insurance is essential in meeting the demands of the job.
